Become an apprentice

Before getting a journeyman license, you must meet the following criteria:

  • 3 years and 8,000 hours of work experience, OR
  • A 2-year degree, along with with 6,000 hours of work experience over 3 years

If you have 3,000 hours of work experience in North Dakota, you can get a "Class B" electrician certification.

This license allows you to do wiring work in small homes before getting a journeyman license.

There are several ways in which you can get trained, including union and non-union programs or vocational schools.

Union and Non-Union Apprenticeship Programs

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) teamed up to offer JATCS, which are training programs.

Getting into such an apprenticeship requires you to visit the Dakotas Area Electrical Apprenticeship and Training Fund JATC.

This JATC requires you to renew your apprenticeship every year and register it within 1.5 months of employment.

Getting a journeyman license

A journeyman performs electrical work without supervision, and the requirements are below:

  • 8,000 hours of job experience
  • Apprenticeship in North Dakota
  • Finish your training program

The needed paperwork includes an application form, your Apprenticeship Training Completion Certificate, and the job verification record.

To pass the exam, you need a score of 70%.

Your license should be renewed every year, by the last day of March.

Before renewing, you also need to complete 8 extra hours of classes from which 4 cover the electrical code.

Become a master electrician

To get licensed as a master electrician, you must be hired by a contractor and have experience as a journeyman.

To apply for the exam you must submit a form which includes a job verification record.

The minimum passing score for this exam is 70%.

Your license should be renewed every year by the last day of April.

Before renewing, you also need to complete 8 extra hours of classes from which 4 cover the electrical code.

North Dakota also allows you to get a Master of Record license.

This certification enables you to perform work on commercial buildings leased by your employer.

This exam is the same as the one for a master electrician, but you need to provide a $500,000 general liability bond.

Becoming an electrical contractor

To become a contractor, you need to have a master electrician certification and:

  • A year of experience as a journeyman in the state
  • General liability insurance of $500,000
  • Be an undertaking fund contributor

To apply for this exam, submit a form which includes a job verification record.

You must pass the testing with a 70% score to get your license.

Your license should be renewed every year by the last day of April.
